“The lessons of history … show conclusively that continued dependence upon relief induces a spiritual and moral disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole out relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit.” ~Franklin Roosevelt
Welcome to the Welfare Nation.
Paid for with your paycheck.
There is now a new record of 41 million people on food stamps, that is 1 in 7, and expected to rise to 43 million shortly. Don’t try shopping at Wal-Mart at midnight when the food stamp distribution to 41 million debit cards happens as USA Today explains, “Shoppers mill around the store after 11 p.m., killing time until their accounts are replenished. When midnight strikes, they rush for the checkout counter.”
How many people rely on a check from the government (i.e., you and me)…let’s do the math…
We can include anyone receiving Unemployment Benefits, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, government assisted housing, WIC, TANF, government aided child support and energy and utility assistance programs. Don’t forget that many state, county and cities have their own welfare/aid programs as well.
On top of that lets add in the rapid expansion of city, county, state and federal governments with all of those employees who indeed get their entire check from taxpayers, and their pension benefits and their early retirement and health care benefits. This includes police and fire fighter government unions and teachers in every public school in the country.
Then toss onto that heap the bank bailouts, the government union bailouts, the GM buyout, and the billions doled out to foreclosed homeowner assistance programs to help millions of people in foreclosure or thinking about it.
When you add all those people up, is there anyone left who is not getting paid off by the government? Ultimately, every one of those people is a vote for more government expansion and more taxes.
Sure there will be a few that are smart enough to know the unsustainability of this direction, but not enough to raise a statistical eyebrow. It is clearly in every one of these people’s own self-interest to keep voting for anyone who will keep the free money flowing…..right from your wallet to theirs.
And let’s not forget all the rampant abuse. In the news today, the Feds took down the largest case of Medicare fraud in history, rounding up 44 people that frauded the taxpayer out of more than $100 million. This is just a fraction of a fraction of the fraud that exists in every single one of the social programs and government bailouts I have listed above. Just a fraction!
For example, the dozens of stories I’ve heard from blog comments, co-workers and friends about people they know abusing unemployment. Last night, I learned that someone I know who is on unemployment not only wrapped up a month long tour of New Zealand, Singapore and Central America, but just got back from a week long Mexican Riviera cruise.
And YOU got to pay for all of it!
